What Happens to City Water Between the Plant and Your Tap

What Happens to City Water Between the Plant and Your Tap

People hear "city water" and assume the story ends at the treatment plant. It does not. Across New York City and New Jersey, water that left the plant in good order still has a long trip ahead of it, and that trip is where most of the complaints people actually have get created.

The street main. Water mains in this part of the country are old, and they are worked on constantly. Every repair, every hydrant flush, every pressure change stirs sediment that was sitting quietly. That is why water sometimes runs cloudy or gritty for an afternoon and then clears up.

The service line. This is the pipe that runs from the main into your building. Nobody thinks about it, because nobody can see it. Its age and material are set by whenever the building was connected, which in a lot of the neighborhoods we work in was a very long time ago.

The building’s own plumbing. In a pre-war walk-up or a century-old row house, water travels through risers and branch lines that have been in place for generations before it reaches a kitchen faucet. A building can add taste, odor and sediment all by itself.

And the disinfectant. Water has to arrive with a disinfectant residual still in it, which is a good thing and also the reason so many people say their tap "tastes like a pool". Carbon filtration takes that out at the point you actually drink from.

None of that means your water is unsafe. It means the water at your tap is not identical to the water at the plant, and the only way to know the difference for your building is to test at your own faucet. That is where we start, and the test does not cost you anything.
